Welcome to the dynamic and engaging world of World Cynosport Rally Limited (WCRL) Rally, where dog owners can enjoy a fun and exciting way to bond with their pets through obedience and performance sports. At Golden Acres, we're diving into what makes WCRL Rally a great choice for both seasoned competitors and newcomers alike.

What is WCRL Rally?

WCRL Rally is a team sport that emphasizes the connection between dogs and their handlers. It's designed for participants of all levels and encourages them to navigate a course of designated stations with the dog performing specified behaviors. What sets WCRL Rally apart is its inclusivity and the ability to foster a deep bond between dog and handler through smooth performance and teamwork.

Treating in the Ring

One of the unique aspects of WCRL Rally is the flexibility regarding treating in the ring. While most dog sports have strict rules against this, WCRL understands the importance of positive reinforcement in training and competition. Handlers are allowed to reward their dogs with treats in the ring under specific conditions, enhancing training and performance by keeping the dogs motivated and focused.

Introducing Flash Rally

Flash Rally is a newer program within the WCRL, designed to offer a faster-paced and more fluid experience. This program eliminates stationary exercises like sits, downs, and jumps, allowing for a briskly moving course that challenges both dog and handler to maintain constant momentum and attention. The Flash Rally classes are particularly exciting because they cater to handlers who prefer a quicker pace and dynamic challenges, making it a perfect fit for agile and high-energy dogs, or dogs who do not like to sit (like mine).

The Flash Rally program also allows for treating in specific sections of the course, although there are guidelines to ensure that the treats do not disrupt the flow of performance or distract other competitors. This addition makes the Flash Rally not only a test of skill but also an excellent way for teams to practice effective communication and reinforcement in a competitive setting.

History of WCRL Rally

The World Cynosport Rally Limited (WCRL), formerly known as the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) Rally, was established to create a competitive environment that focuses on the effective communication and strong bond between dogs and their handlers. The sport originated as a derivative of traditional obedience trials but with an emphasis on a more engaging and less rigid performance atmosphere.

Evolution into WCRL

In its early days, rally obedience was designed to be more accessible and enjoyable, encouraging a positive atmosphere where dogs and handlers could perform obedience routines in a less formal environment compared to traditional obedience competitions. As the sport gained popularity, it evolved to include more complex and varied courses, allowing for a range of skill levels from beginners to advanced competitors.

In 2012, the WCRL was formed when the APDT Rally program was transferred to the United States Dog Agility Association (USDAA). This transition marked a new era for the sport, focusing on inclusivity and growth. The USDAA brought its experience in organizing agility competitions to rally obedience, further professionalizing the sport and expanding its reach.

Expanding Horizons with Flash Rally

The introduction of innovative programs like Flash Rally reflects WCRL’s commitment to evolving with the needs of modern handlers and their dogs. By streamlining the course and focusing on continuous movement, Flash Rally addresses the desire for a more dynamic and fast-paced competition style, which appeals to a broader range of participants and spectators alike.

WCRL Today

Today, WCRL stands as a testament to the spirit of innovation and inclusivity in dog sports. With its comprehensive approach to rules, classes, and competitions, WCRL has not only preserved the essence of rally as a sport but also enhanced it, offering a platform where the bond between a dog and its handler is celebrated through teamwork and mutual respect.

Through its rich history and ongoing evolution, WCRL continues to be a beacon for those looking to engage in a sport that values positive reinforcement, skill development, and the joy of competing side by side with one's canine partner.

Have a reactive, nervous, or sensitive dog that would not do well in a formal ring at a competition? The WCRL@Home Program could be just what you need. This innovative initiative allows handlers and their dogs to participate in rally obedience trials from the comfort of their own homes or local training facilities. Rally@Home is designed to maintain the standards of traditional WCRL events while providing participants the convenience of competing remotely. Rally events events allow for variations in space, equipment and supplies, and certain general rules for flexibility and safety while performing in a less formal setting than at “live” competitions.
